Perceptions of voices – Full set

Welcome to our recording site!

Hello! Are you from a Black or South-Asian ethnic background? We need you!

Most research is biased towards studying White Europeans. We need more Black and South Asian older adult-representatives to have their voices heard! This study to allow future research to use data that can benefit the BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) community!

PAYMENT CRITERIA:

You will earn a £5 Amazon voucher if you submit usable data for our study. To be eligible for payment, you should complete the survey in full, and submit both recordings as instructed in this study.

We also expect participants to meet ALL of the below criteria to record audio as these are the settings that have been shown to work without complications (your submission will not be approved and no payment will be made if you don’t meet all the criteria):

  • You must be aged 60+, Black or South-Asian, who speaks English and has no hearing problems.
  • You must use a Chrome browser only, on a computer (or mobile phone) with a working microphone.
  • You must record in a QUIET room with no background noise or other people talking or interfering while you record. If you have your phone in the room with you, it should be silent. Being in a quiet room is VERY important for our study, because we need a clear voice to analyse the recordings later.
  • We are asking you to record each sentence twice. Do not worry about making a mistake, simply repeat the sentence. Only press stop when you have finished the complete set of sentences. Please say the exact sentence shown each time, in a clear tone of voice. Please do not mumble, these recordings are a very important part of our study.

ARE YOU BLACK OR SOUTH-ASIAN, BUT YOUNGER THAN 60?

Don’t worry, you can still help! Recruit all your older family members, aged 60+ (e.g. parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc) and help them record THEIR voice online, as instructed in this study.

You will earn £5 Amazon vouchers as a team, for each 60+ year old family member you recruit and successfully submit all their survey and recording data, according to the payment criteria!

RECORDING INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1:
Record yourself speaking all 20 sentences twice using a calm and neutral tone of voice (e.g. using your natural speaking voice). Do not worry about making a mistake, simply repeat the full sentence again, without stopping the recording. Only press stop when you have finished the complete set of 20 sentences.

STEP 2:
In a second step, we want you to record all 20 sentences again twice, but this time in a tone of voice that promotes a sense of trust in the listener (no laughing please). These recordings are very important to our study. Pretend that you are speaking to someone and you want to show them you are trustworthy to do something.

BEGIN STUDY:

Your recordings are automatically submitted when you press stop recording.

Your data will be fully anonymous, so that it is not possible to identify you from our stored data. Any data from participants that are deemed as spamming, disrespectful, or unusable for the purpose of our study, will be considered as a breach of our study’s criteria and will be removed without payment. This is a very important study to support the BAME community in research, so please act with honesty and record your voice carefully as instructed. Thank you for your participation.
