Parents Voice Use Project – Research on Voice and Speech

Welcome to our study on how parents speak to their children.

Below, please listen to one example of a situation that parents may experience. Directly after listening to the example, enter your Prolific ID and record your reply, using the type of voice pattern you would use if your child spoke to you like that, i.e. speak in your natural voice.

Scenario 1:

- “What do you have to do?” - “How many subjects have you got?” - “When was the homework set?” - “Some of this was set a week ago. I did tell you at the weekend you should have done some of it then” - “In what way is it too much?” - “What subjects are they?” - “How long do you think it is going to take?” - “Perhaps what we could do is go over what you need to do so we can see how much there is” - “Shall we go over what you need to do so we can see how much there is” - “That sounds like a lot, and you were hoping to talk to Trent” - “Is it important that you see Trent this evening?” - “Why do you need to see Trent this evening” - “You may need to tell Trent that you have too much homework and cant meet this evening” - “Well, the homework needs to be done. I suggest you contact Trent and let him know that you will only be able to speak with him if you get your homework finished” - “Trent is a good friend of yours, I am sure he will understand if you tell him you may not be able to speak this evening”
